Therapy for High Achievers Who Still Feel Not Good Enough

In person in Lynnwood, WA · Online across Washington and California

From the outside, your life looks like it's working. You've built a career people respect. You're the one others rely on. You've read the books, maybe done years of therapy, and you can explain exactly where your patterns come from.

And still, inside, something whispers that it's never enough.

Does this sound familiar?

  • Every success feels like relief, not joy, and it fades within a day. You are thinking “What’s next?”

  • A small mistake or a single piece of feedback can ruin your week.

  • You feel like a fraud, waiting for someone to find out.

  • Rest feels lazy. Slowing down makes you anxious.

  • Around a parent, you suddenly feel small again, no matter how accomplished you are.

  • You understand your patterns perfectly, but understanding hasn't changed how you feel.

You might be a physician who can calm a patient in crisis but can't quiet her own inner critic. An engineer who gets promoted and immediately worries about failing. A lawyer, executive or business owner who has achieved everything you set out to do and still feels empty. Or a therapist who helps others heal and wonders why your own healing feels out of reach. You are a program manager who is helping everyone all day long, but nobody is coming to help you.

Why insight isn't enough

Many high achievers learned early that love, safety or approval depended on performing well. You have to earn it. Maybe a parent was critical, hard to please or emotionally unavailable. Maybe your family carried strong expectations about success, duty or making sacrifices worthwhile. Maybe you were the "responsible one" who couldn't afford to fall apart.

Achievement became a way to stay safe. Get people off your back. Your mind has since grown up, but your nervous system may still be living by those old rules. That's why you can know you're capable and still feel like you're not enough. The belief isn't stored only in your thoughts. It lives in your body and in parts of you that formed long ago.

This is also why talking about it, on its own, often isn't enough for high achievers. You're already good at understanding. What's needed is healing at a deeper level.

How we work together

I combine three approaches that work beneath the thinking mind:

  • EMDR therapy helps reprocess the memories behind "I'm not good enough," so they lose their emotional charge.

  • IFS (Internal Family Systems) helps you get to know your inner critic and perfectionist parts. They're usually trying to protect you, and they can learn to relax.

  • Somatic Experiencing helps your body learn that it's safe to slow down, rest and feel.

Many high achievers prefer an EMDR intensive: focused, longer sessions over a few days instead of months of weekly appointments. Intensives fit demanding schedules and let us go deeper without stopping every 50 minutes. If you carry a lot of shame or harsh self-criticism, my CPTSD & Toxic Shame Intensive is designed for exactly that. Weekly therapy is available too.

What changes can feel like

Healing can look like this: the inner critic gets quieter. Success starts to feel satisfying instead of temporary. Mistakes sting less and pass faster. Time with family feels less like shrinking back into childhood. And there is finally room for rest, without needing to earn it. You are more sure of who you are, not what you do.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I still feel not good enough even though I'm successful? Because the feeling usually started long before your achievements did. If your sense of worth was shaped by early criticism, pressure or conditional approval, success can't fully reach that old belief. Therapy that works with the nervous system and inner parts, like EMDR and IFS, can heal it at its source.

I'm a therapist (or doctor). Will therapy work if I already understand my patterns? Yes. Understanding is valuable, but it's not the same as healing. EMDR, IFS and somatic therapy work with the parts of you that insight hasn't reached. I also offer consultation and supervision to therapists, so I understand the particular pressures of that work.

Is an EMDR intensive a good fit for busy professionals? Often, yes. Intensives condense therapy into a few focused days, so you can make meaningful progress without fitting weekly sessions into a packed calendar. We'll talk during a free consultation about whether an intensive or weekly therapy fits you better.

Do you only work with certain cultures or backgrounds? No. I work with people from all backgrounds. I especially enjoy working with people who carry heavy family, cultural or religious expectations, and I bring sensitivity to those experiences, whatever your story is.

Do you offer therapy online? Yes. I offer online therapy throughout Washington and California, and in-person sessions at my office in Lynnwood, WA.

You don't have to keep earning your worth
